This past week some 150 businesses from Midwestern states met with officials in Washington, D.C. to push for new climate and energy policies.

A question raised was, “whether or not the U.S. will be a worldwide leader in the next global industry, green technologies.”

In Kansas City this week a couple of worthwhile events are taking place. On Tuesday 13 October from 6-8:30 p.m. at the Discovery Center on 4750 Troost, Audubon Missouri is hosting the Community Forum on Clean Energy, which will include a discussion on energy efficiency policies. It's free but requires registration. For more information call 816-333-3293.

On Wednesday 14 October from 3-4:30 p.m. at the offices of the Mid-America Regional Council on 600 Broadway, a program called “Monetizing Sustainability” will be presented as part of a web conference series. The discussion will concern itself with how incentives are created for sustainability. For more information and registration call 816-474-4240.

While unspoken and not on the agenda of these two events, I think they are small pieces in our moving toward resilient communities.

What form the resilient community movement takes on a global scale is yet to be determined, but I think we have little choice but to seriously contemplate how we create viable, “self-sufficient” regional and local entities.
